Getting Started - Data Validation with Field Comparison Queries

In our final getting started article on queries, we will review data validation with Field Comparison Queries.

Field Comparison queries allow you to compare two fields.  This is particularly useful when performing data validation.  In this example, we are comparing the Host Name field between SCCM and Active Directory.  We have over 20,000 matches and zero that do not match.  The data is extremely consistent!

Now, let's review aggregated Preferred Host Name data with Active Directory.  If you are not familiar with Preferred Fields, you can review this KB article

To add more context, preferred fields add an extra level of intelligence to deconflict fields with multiple values across your data set.  Your TAM will often promote the use of preferred fields as they help reduce noise and add clarity when comparing data across many sources.  For example, scan technologies tend to be lower confidence data sources for OS fingerprinting.  Further, there are times when you want to have a single value for a field.  While there are times when you can have multiple values in a preferred field (i.e. Network Interface MAC or IPs), it often times does provide the desired results and a higher level of confidence in your data.  This is especially important when performing CMDB enrichment with Enforcement Center.

Back to our example of comparing Preferred Host Name with Active Directory.

We have over 15,000 devices where these values don't match.

When you look at the data, you can see the reason is AD is providing a FQDN.  We've got you covered with the Preferred Host Name (FQDN) option!  This lowers our results that don't match to just over 2,700.

The more you dig into your data set and understand the nuances across different systems, the better you can interpret the data and report with confidence!
